Hiking is not one of the sports people usually think about in connection with Beijing. However, the city's surroundings offer plenty of opportunities for hikers to exercise their hobby and experience a more rural side of China.

While parks and attractions within the city proper make for leisurely strolls and interesting walks, true hikers may want to get out of the city. One of the best known hikes in the vicinity of Beijing is the route from Simatai to Jinshanling along the Great Wall. Other spots that are less well know, but have been recommended by a hiking Beijing resident, are mount Xiao Wu Tai in the neighbouring Hebei province and Bai He Xia Gu (the White River) in the Huai Rou district of Beijing.

Like anywhere else in the world, a thorough preparation is the key to a successful and enjoyable outing. This includes accurate maps and information about the intended route as well as the right equipment and adequate clothing, especially since summers are hot and winters cold in Beijing. Less experienced hikers may find it easier and safer to participate in organised tours.
