Landscape.

From the pale grey of a frozen lake in one of Beijing’s parks in winter to the vivid red of the autumn leaves in the mountainous countryside to the city’s Northwest, Beijing’s land- and cityscape has many facets and seems to change with the seasons.

Situated at the Northern end of the North China Plain, Beijing’s roughly concentric layout spreads out over flat land and its skyline is dominated by architectural accomplishments rather than prominent mountains. Leaving the city towards the North or the West, however, the scenery changes as one enters the Jundu, Yanshan or Xishan mountains through which the Great Wall draws its erratic line.

Unlike many other great cities, Beijing lies neither on the ocean nor on a major river, although the Yongding, the Chaobai, the Beiyun, the Juma and the Juhe river, as well as the Grand Canal, run through the municipality.

A good spot to admire some of the landscape of Beijing’s surroundings, as well as Chinese landscaping, is the Fragrant Hills Park which is said to be spectacular in autumn, when the leaves turn red.
