“There are nine million bicycles in Beijing“ sings Katie Melua, though the actual number lies probably closer to 14 million by now. The high number testifies to the fact that the bicycle still is the main means of transport for Beijingers – just as for the Chinese elsewhere.
Travelling through the city, one can see bicycles in all shapes, conditions and colours – and seemingly from different decades. From the rusty old model lacking even brakes to the latest electrical version, they all weave their way through Beijing’s traffic amidst the growing number of cars. These latter are still vastly outnumbered by their two-wheeled counterparts, even though at traffic peak times, it might seem otherwise.
The bicycle is one of the best means to explore the city and to get a feel for its distances and neighbourhoods. Especially the old parts of Beijing featuring the famous hutongs (neighbourhoods made up of traditional houses with a courtyard) are perfect for trips on two wheels. In daily life too, all the little courses, such as the quick run to the supermarket or to one’s favourite bakery, will probably be executed fastest and cheapest by bike.
Renting or purchasing a bicycle in Beijing is easy and relatively inexpensive. However, not all bikes are equal – neither in terms of price nor of quality.
While it is easy to get around on bike within the city, getting out of it and leaving the traffic and smog behind is a little more difficult on two wheels by reason of the distances. The city proper including its inner suburbs extends over an area of approximately 1´300 square km, and the whole municipality covers about 16´800 square km. Nevertheless, it is of course possible and bikers who have enough time at hand can participate in cycling tours that take them to the Great Wall – or further.
One caveat, whether enjoying the atmosphere of a ride through Beijing’s hutongs or cruising along city boulevards and country roads, one should never forget the potential dangers of traffic and always keep one’s eyes open.
