Beijingers became sport-crazy after hearing that Beijing had been designated host city for the 2008 Olympics, but fortunately a thriving market was already in place to meet the surge in demand, with plenty of sports retailers ready to supply China’s budding athletes.
If China has a lot of sporting retailers, that’s because it has to – current surveys show that China has over 300 million basketball players, which is the entire population of America! With this fact in mind, it’s not surprising that locating a sports retailer in the city is no pressing task. Though the city does not have any larger outlet stores, there are many smaller sports retailers selling equipment for every sport under the sun.
Though global brands such as Nike and Adidas are popular in the capital, with the new flagship Adidas store open in Sanlitun, China also has many of its own sporting goods brands, which are very popular with the Chinese people, such as Li Ning, Erke, and Peak.
Dedicated stores for all of these brands can be found throughout the city, with the famous shopping street Wangfujing at the epicenter of the sport phenomenon.
Local supermarkets are another option, especially when price and convenience are paramount. Most supermarkets have a sporting-goods section, stocked with badminton rackets and ping pong shoes enough for any enthusiast.
