China may not be the first Asian country that comes to mind when you think of electronics, but there are plenty of places to shop for them in Beijing, at prices that are sure to beat those in Japan and Korea.
Beijingers are becoming tech-savvy faster than your iPod gets obsoleted, and a growing number of Chinese brands are gaining popularity in the domestic market and expect to expand abroad soon.
Mobile phones and cameras can be had on the cheap, making China a great place to shop before returning home. Computers tend to be priced similarly to international standards, so there’s no special reason to buy them here, but also no reason not to.
Your first stop on any serious electronics shopping spree will likely be Zhongguancun, the electronics shopping district near Wudaokou. This area is chock-full of markets and stalls selling electronics, but be warned, sellers can be pushy and haggling is the norm. For a more staid shopping experience, try the electronics stores inside shopping centers.
DVDs are always a hot item in Beijing, and often a subject of controversy. Beware anyone touting DVDs on the sidewalk and asking you to come with them to another location, for the same reason you shouldn’t go with anyone trying to get you away from a public place. But if someone is selling DVDs openly, don’t be afraid to browse. They are surely illegal, but it’s the seller, not the buyer, who has to worry about that. Attempting to bring pirated DVDs out of the country carries some risk, though prosecutions are rare.
