As you would expect, the mission of the National Museum of China is to inform and educate about Chinese art and history.

The massive building was one of ten structures erected in celebration of the foundation of the Republic of China in 1959. The four-storied main building and its wings today house a permanent exhibition divided into two main periods of Chinese history. One section depicts China in its early days including the fossilized relicts of the Beijing- and Yuanmou human; another significant section is dedicated to the last 150 years especially focusing on the Chinese Revolution and the history of the Communist party.

The collection is regularly updated and different temporal exhibitions take place.
