Beer Gardens.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, enjoying a cold beer with friends in an outdoor beer garden is a favorite past time for many Westerners. Luckily, there are also a few great beer gardens here in Beijing where it’s possible to soak up some sun with a cold pijiu (啤酒) in hand.

As far as quantity is concerned, Beijing is still very far behind the likes of the beer garden superpower Germany. However, there are a few gems out there, some of which even offer high-quality German beer, such as the Paulaner Brauhaus (which brews its own beer on location).

A cheaper alternative that is crowded with students and people of all ages from around the globe is the International Beer Town in Beijing’s university area Wudaokou. This popular hang-out offers beer for only 4 RMB a pint, as well as an array of snacks, such as the beloved local specialty chuanr (BBQ meat skewers).

Another option is the Great Wall Beer Garden at the Great Wall Sheraton Hotel, which offers local Yanjing beer and plenty of summery BBQ treats, as well as plenty of shade under the hotel garden’s trees.
