In Beijing, dance often takes a back seat to the acrobatics and Peking Opera shows more popular with visitors. But dance is alive and kicking in the capital, with plenty of options on offer.
The Poly Theatre in Dongzhimen often hosts international and domestic ballet troupes on tour through the city, while the Tianqiao Theatre in the south serves as the home base for the National Ballet of China.
While ballet has enjoyed government support in China since the 1950s, modern dance is still relatively new to the scene, having emerged in the reforms of the 80s. Drawing on ancient themes and contemporary ideas, the Beijing Modern Dance Company is an excellent example of this emerging art in China.
