Currently there are six schools and one college under the umbrella of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) – and as any good educational institution it also boasts an interesting museum.
The academy itself was founded in 1950 and is well known for the fact that Mao Zedong inscribed the school’s name.
The academy’s collection of about 13,000 works covers a variety of genres and styles, evoking a special mix of ancient and modern Chinese masters and fine pieces of arts done by the academy’s students.
As of September 2008 the CAFA will have its museum in a new building designed by Japanese artist Arata Isozaki. The new six story building will be used for permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as artists’ studios, lecture and conference rooms and a cafeteria and bookstore.
This certainly sounds like an agreeable space for receiving new inspirations and artistic input.
