A classroom full of students of many ethnic and national backgrounds, all struggling to master the proper tones of Mandarin – this is where many people begin their foray into learning Chinese.

With its stated primary goal of teaching foreign students Chinese language and culture, it’s no wonder that the classrooms of BLCU, or Beiyu as it is known colloquially in Chinese, are many foreigners’ first encounter with the Chinese educational system.  The university has visiting students from Europe, Japan, Korea, and America at any given time, while also offering degree courses to Chinese students in foreign languages and teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

The university offers “regular” Chinese courses of four hours daily, and intensive courses of six classroom hours daily.  The classroom experience is eclectic, with undergraduates, graduate students and professionals of every stripe struggling to memorize characters and pronunciation. BLCU’s draw card is the size of their program, which means added flexibility and resources for students.
