Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is much more than just acupuncture – and it’s not just for Chinese people.
TCM encompasses a whole range of traditional treatments and therapies, including herbal medicine, massage and acupuncture. If there were a unifying theory behind TCM, it would be qi, the energy that supposedly flows through body along invisible meridians. But TCM is much less concerned with theory and cosmology than one might suppose – rather it is a results-based practice that has emerged from centuries of trial and error.
TCM is inevitably woven into the practice of modern medicine in China – just go to the nearest pharmacy, and you’ll find a tree-bark extract in serious looking vials sitting next to the cold medicine. Complain of a cough and you might get either one.
For emergencies, always go to the nearest international hospital or modern clinic. But while you’re in China, why not give TCM a try the next time you have a headache or a sore back? It can’t hurt to try, and you might just discover a little wisdom that’s been overlooked by modern medicine.
