Students.

For better or worse, the student community in Beijing is all about one place – Wudaokou.  Close proximity of the “big three” universities – Peking, Tsinghua, and BLCU – makes it inevitable that any foreign student who passes through Beijing will end up in the Wu.

Located in the wilds of Haidian, Wudaokou’s non-central location has fostered a certain separatism among the student set, who don’t mix quite as easily as they otherwise might with the rest of the rest of the expat population.  Likewise, many expats in the east miss out entirely on Wudaokou’s particular charms, which lend it the feeling of a small(ish) college town.

The population of foreign students in Beijing is eclectic, with undergraduates and graduate students from all over the world all united in the esoteric study of tones and characters.

This diverse population revolves around a string of bars and clubs near the subway station.  The epicenter of the student community is undoubtedly Lush, a restaurant/bar whose weekly quiz night is a right of passage for foreign students.
